Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to acitivity of insulin. The complications of diabetes are related to long-term elevation of blood glucose concentrations.

Periodontitis has been referred to as the sixth complication of diabetes. Although people with diabetes are known to be at risk for periodontal disease, it has not been clarified as to which comes first. What is a fact is, Periodontal health may deterioate more rapidly in poorly controlled diabetics than in other patients.

Patients can control their diabetes and their oral health with a proper diet, exercise and a good oral health program.
